There is a lot to be said for social networking. It is a wonderful way to connect people from all over the world and all walks of life. It’s also a great way to network, make friends and well, you know whatever else it is you want to do online. When I as much younger there was no Internet or 106 & Park; there was Soul Train and channel 2, 4, 7, 9(out of Canada) 50, 56(PBS) and 62 (Black Folks TV) if you lived in Detroit that is. Cable you ask? What is that? Yep, that’s it, just Soul Train. I really envy and admire the choices this younger generation has today. You may not see it as anything special, but you do have experiences and technology at your finger tips that was not even thought of years past.
Unfortunately that new found freedom of expression and exposure comes with a dark side. Lack of physical activity, social courtesy, and the loss of ordinary life skills creating a society that is hooked to text messaging to the point the structure of the human thumb is being altered. We have a generation that does not know it is rude to talk and text in the presence of someone you should be sharing your time with; and worse yet they don’t care. Would you like your surgeon, to stop during your surgery to take a call from his wife? Or worse yet his mistress? I can hear someone right now sayin…yeah…get yo groove on.”
I’m not mad at ya! I know times are different and I am perhaps one of the few folks over 50 left on the planet that thinks young people today are wonderful, full of life, creativity, love, caring, compassion and dedication. They just don’t know they have it in them because they are caught up in a world that shuns them, describes them as lazy, boorish, selfish, vulgar spoiled brats who can’t appreciate what the old farts have done to pave the way. Look, this is nothing new. This squabble will continue for years, perhaps 100 years or more; it is what it is and if someone can figure out a way to join the generations please let me know. Till then I am going to keep the faith and know that even though you are 17, 19, 23, 29 or 34, if you live long enough you will be 50 or 60 or 70 and you will be thinking about this Blog sayin…Oh, now I get it! Wow!!!
